These are rules that apply only within the confines of our station, and are not imposed by any outside agency.
Rotation Clocks
All DJ's (unless playing a certain format which has been pre-approved by the Station Manager) must follow the rotation clocks which are located up above the consoles. Songs will be played off of the mini-disks according to the letter designation on the disk corresponding to the letter on the rotation clock. For the category of "O", for oldie, the carts at the rear of the DJ booth are to be used, and can be selected at the DJ's discretion. (DJ's should check the logs for the same night for the previous shifts to ensure that the same song isn't repeated.) This rotation is carefully arranged by the Music Director such that the same song should not be heard twice in the same night. It also serves to allow for the various genres of Contemporary Christian Music to be played, adding variety to the broadcast.
Repetition
Due to the limited music selection on the rotation, repetition is strongly discouraged, with the exception of a phone-in request.
As was previously mentioned, alternative formats are permitted, provided they are approved in advance by the Station Manager. DJ's are encouraged to be creative and add any kind of twist that will make the station more appealing to its listeners, such as formats, pseudonyms, theme nights, etc..
Ticket/Merchandise Giveaways
Check the DJ booth and the studio before every shift to find out if there are any giveaways for that evening. The method of the giveaway is open to the DJ's discretion, provided it is made clear that the giveaway is open to all listeners. You can announce the name of the winner(s) over the air, or put them over the air, provided you have their permission (invasion of privacy rule). WFRScc employees and volunteers are not eligible to win, and all giveaways/chances to win must be done with a WFRScc employee present. All information on the winners must be written clearly on a giveaway log, and all winners must be students at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Students may enter/win as often as they like.
Public Service Announcements
P.S.A.'s are assigned on the program logs before every night's shifts by the Program Director, and are to be played/read as close to the assigned times as possible. P.S.A. carts are located in the rack by the door of the DJ booth, or on designated mini-disks which should be available for every shift.
Promos
WFRScc promotional spots should be available at all times in the DJ booth, and can be played at the DJ's discretion, provided the name/number of the spot and the time it was played are both recorded on the program log.
Criticizing Station Programming and Policy
During your airbreaks, never speak badly about the station, its policies, management, or music format. Also, avoid cutting off or distorting a song that you don't like - chances are there are listeners out there who do. Requests made by listeners are subject to the DJ's discretion, but it is a good idea to play requests as often as possible.
Airbreak Pointers
Mention the station's call letters several times, occasionally even throwing in a promo spot. Tell the listeners who you are, and when you do your show, so that if they like you they might tune in again. Also, try to break at least every four or five songs to let the listeners know what they have been listening to. During your airbreaks, try to avoid rambling on about things the audience couldn't care less about - that's one of the surest ways to lose listeners.
Arriving
Try to arrive 20 minutes early for each shift, simply so that you can get your act together before you go on, and to tackle any problems (lack of news, equipment problems, etc.) so that you are in your best form on the air.
Leaving
Make sure that before you leave the DJ booth that it is clean and organized, and that you've noted any problems that might make the next DJ's shift a little easier. It is also nice to announce who the next DJ is before you sign off, so that the listener doesn't think we're simply signing off for the night.
Pulling Carts/Mini-Disks
It isn't hard to get lost in a mess of carts and mini-disks that haven't been properly replaced after being played. Try to put all of the selections back where you got them.
Guests
It is preferred that DJ's do not invite guests into the station during their shifts. If you really have to, permission must be given by the attending WFRScc staff-member in advance. The guest(s) must also be told the key rules of being in the station.
Use of Phones
Always answer the phones politely by giving the station's call letters and your name. While being courteous to callers is important, do not neglect what is going out over the air. Do not be afraid to put the caller on hold if you have to do an airbreak or change a song, the caller will understand. The phones should not be used for personal use without permission of a WFRScc staff-member.
Food and Drink
There is positively no food or drink allowed anywhere inside the radio studio doors, as spilled-on equipment is costly and hard to replace. Failure to comply could result in a suspension.
Technical Problems
Any technical problems encountered should be reported to a WFRScc staff-member as soon as it arises, so that it can be fixed as soon as possible.
