These are not rules to be followed, but rather tools that you can use to better your jocking experience.
The Rotation
The clocks are there to ensure that the listeners are not getting the same songs over and over again. Chances are, if they hear some good variety, they will tune in again.
Listener Requests
Although you might not like all of the songs that are requested, playing requests is a good way to keep an audience listening. Never promise to play a request that we don't have, and never make fun of a song that is requested which you don't like.
Collective Voice
Try to use "we" instead of "I" when referring to what you are doing with the music. Saying "we just heard so-and-so" makes the listener feel more like part of the show.
Slogan and Call-Letters
During airbreaks, mention the call-letters a few times, a long with our slogan, "The Franciscan Spirit." Repetition will help the listeners the next time they decide where to tune in.
Personal ID
Mentioning your name during your show makes your show seem more... well... personal.
Back-Announcing
It is important to keep your listeners informed of what it is they have heard. If a listener likes a song but never finds out who sings it or what it's called, it can be very frustrating. Also, try to throw in any information you might know about the artist(s) you are playing, so that you're not "just spinning records."
Personality
Showing charisma on the air is one of the best ways to keep an audience. If you have personality, your show will have it too; your show will talk to people, and people will listen.
Mentioning Other Stations
Don't. It gives the other stations free publicity and free listeners.
Background Noise
The microphone in the DJ-booth will pick up any noise you make, and is distracting if you're talking, and annoying if it happens during moments of silence. Also, if someone talks in the background, and happens to mention one of the seven dirty words or a call to action, you will be held accountable.
Plan Ahead
Figuring out beforehand what you are going to do during your shift will probably make your show run more smoothly, and will help you out if something unexpected happens and you are stuck with something to do.
